My name is Shabnam, and I am a Dementia Coordinator with Together Dementia Support, where I provide a much-needed service to people living with dementia, as well as their families and carers. My work focuses particularly on supporting people from South Asian communities, where there is a real need for culturally appropriate and accessible dementia support. As part of my role, I run a weekly friendship and activity group called Pyaari Yaadein, meaning “precious memories.” This is a group that I am incredibly passionate about. It provides a warm, welcoming and culturally familiar environment where South Asian people living with dementia can come together, build friendships, participate in meaningful activities, share memories and experiences, and feel a genuine sense of belonging. The response to the group has been extremely encouraging; in just the last six months, Pyaari Yaadein has grown by 50%, reflecting both the increasing need for this type of service and the value it brings to the community. I am proud of the relationships we have built and of the positive difference the group is making in the lives of those who attend.
Through my work, I have witnessed dementia first-hand and have seen the profound and debilitating impact it can have, not only on the person living with dementia but on the entire family around them. I have supported families as they navigate the many challenges that dementia brings, including families caring for loved ones who are approaching the end of their lives. One of the most heartbreaking aspects of my role is witnessing a family watch someone they love gradually lose their independence, abilities and, in many cases, aspects of the person they have known for so many years. These experiences have strengthened my determination to raise awareness and ensure that families do not feel isolated or alone. While I am incredibly proud of the support Together Dementia Support provides and of the work we are doing through Pyaari Yaadein, I know there is still so much more to be done. My ambition is to reach more South Asian communities, particularly those who may not yet be accessing dementia services, and to create greater awareness, understanding and openness around dementia. I want to help break down stigma, encourage earlier conversations and ensure that people living with dementia, their families and carers know that support is available. For me, this work is far more than a job; it is a responsibility I feel deeply committed to, and a privilege to be able to support people and families through one of the most challenging journeys they may ever face.
The next walk we are doing is the Together Trail on Saturday 12th September at Wythenshawe park starting at 11am. The walk follows an accessible 2.2km circular route. Complete one lap or as many as you like at your own pace. The event is suitable for all ages and abilities, and wheelchair users and pushchairs are welcome.
Everyone who raises £50 will receive an official Together Trail T-shirt, and those who raise £100 will also receive a Together Trail medal.
