About the event
8 mile moderate challenge including sections of the new Greater Manchester Ringway Trail. Marple lies at the southeast edge of Greater Manchester and is a great base for some wonderful walks. From the roadside start the walk immediately descends into the Goyt Valley, passing the Roman Lakes which used to power the mighty Mellor Mill. We pass the remains of the mill, once the largest cotton mill in the world. A steady climb on paths and bridleways through Mellor Golf course brings us up to the summit at Mellor Cross with fantastic views towards Marple and Manchester. The views open up behind Mellor Cross and we take a flat bridleway heading east. Kinder Scout can be seen in the distance. With most of the climbing behind us, we head gently downhill and into Strines, crossing the railway. Strines was for many years home to a successful printworks which only closed in 2001. The small reservoir we pass houses a beautiful Chinese dovecote. A short climb out of Strines brings us to the wonderful Peak Forest Canal. A gentle stroll along the canal returns us to Marple via some of the famous Marple locks, a series of 16 canal locks which are some of the steepest in the country.
Boots and food
Boots or good walking shoes recommended along with a picnic lunch as we do not pass anywhere to get food on the walk.
