About the event
Shining Tor is the highest hill in Cheshire rising to 559 metres. It is located in the Peak District between Macclesfield and Buxton, the county boundary between Cheshire and Derbyshire runs along the ridge. This is not to be confused with another Shining Tor at Dovedale in the south Peak District. The walk starts from the car park between Errwood and Fernilee Reservoirs in the Goyt Valley, soon we leave the road to climb up onto the moors. A steady climb opens up views back over the national park and the valley. Once at the summit you can look out over Cheshire, Manchester, Shutlingsloe, Winter Hill and Jodrell Bank telescope. A flagged path provides easy walking along the ridge before we drop back down into the valley through the grounds of Errwood Hall, now in ruins.
The walk is approximately 6 to 7 miles, a moderate challenge. Boots or strong walking shoes recommended. There are no facilities in the valley so please bring water and food supplies to keep you moving during the walk!
