About the event
This is a beautiful trail in the Peak District National Park, taking you all the way around Derwent Reservoir and Howden Reservoir in the Upper Derwent Valley. This is a relatively flat route with mainly gravel and tarmac paths that are easy to follow, offering stunning views across the water. Starting from the Fairholmes car park at the tip of Ladybower Reservoir, this trail follows a scenic road that winds northward, tracing the western banks of the Derwent Reservoir. Along this route, you’ll encounter the Monument to the Dambusters, serving as a reminder of the area being used to practice the Dambuster Raid in the Second World War, with these dams being similar to German ones. Continuing on, you will come across the Memorial to Tip, which stands as a touching tribute to a loyal sheepdog named Tip, who faithfully accompanied shepherd Joseph Tagg, even after Tagg lost his life on Howden Moor. For an astonishing 105 days, Tip stayed by his side until they were found. As you continue, the meandering road leads you past the Howden Dam, guiding you along the tranquil waters of Howden Reservoir. Cross the River Westend and venture through the Ditch Clough Plantation, following the reservoir’s edge. Head across the River Derwent before embarking on the second leg of your journey, heading southward along the eastern banks, leading you back to the car park. The trail is suitable for a wide range of fitness levels and makes for a fantastic leisurely walk or cycle with stunning scenery to enjoy along the way.
